The city of joy Kolkata, the cultural capital of India is charming in its own chaotic way. The never ending rush on its historic roads, uncountable festivals, the fascination of its delectable food; and the biggest strength, the people – Kolkata is the city where dreams are born. Though I prefer ‘Calcutta’ over ‘Kolkata’ as it comes from the heart.

If you want a city with a soul, come to Calcutta.

Kolkata surprises you at every corner. It’s people will leave you enlightened, it’s streets will leave you wondering, it’s colors will make you feel magical. One such area is the Mullik Ghat Flower Market, located just below the magnificent Howrah Bridge, adjacent to the Hooghly River. This place is a photographer’s paradise as the flower market is fascinatingly colorful throughout the day. The best time to visit Mullik Ghat Flower Market is early in the morning when fresh flowers are brought in by workers laden on their heads; it’s a cultural revelation for every visitor.

It’s one of the places in Kolkata where you find the contrast between beauty and ugliness, stench and fragrance, color and dirt. It is considered as one of the largest flower markets in India, but do not expect any big stalls and shops selling flowers. Trade takes place along the narrow lanes of the market and in tiny stalls.

The area is radiant virtually 24 hours a day with vendors living in makeshift shacks, some people run, others walk, some stretch in the middle of the road.

Be it any rituals, a wedding ceremony, decoration or whatever the need may be, you’ll get all kind of flowers in this market throughout the year.

Also, if morning 7 O’clock (IST) is not too early for you then there’s another attraction for you. Beside the Mullik Ghat Flower Market the wrestlers practice their art on a small caged area of sand and mud just back from the river which you wouldn’t want to miss. It’s the perfect spot from where you can get a picture perfect view of the Howrah Bridge as well.
